Independent Foreign Fiction Prize 2011

The Prize honours the best work of fiction by a living author, which has been translated into English from any other language and published in the United Kingdom during 2010. Uniquely, the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize gives the winning author and translator equal status: each receives GBP5,000. A longlist will be announced in March 2011, followed by the shortlist in April at London Book Fair. The winner will be announced at a ceremony in Central London in May. The judges for this year's prize are:

The News Frontier Database (USA)

Information Book Award launched (UK)

The School Library Association is launching the Information Book Award for non-fiction, sponsored by Hachette Children's Books. The annual award is designed to support school libraries and to reinforce the importance of non-fiction. Publishers will be called for submissions in early February and the shortlist will be announced in July/August. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in London in November. The award will be split into three categories: under 7s, 7-12 and 12-16 years, and will be judged by librarians, SLA Board members and a member of Peters Bookselling Services. Each section will have a winner and there will also be an overall winner. Peters Bookselling Services will supply packs of the shortlisted titles to schools, with children invited to vote for their favourite book in September and October 2011

Library clears its shelves in protest at closure threat (UK)

The library at Stony Stratford, on the outskirts of Milton Keynes, looks like the aftermath of a crime, its shell-shocked staff presiding over an expanse of emptied shelves. Only a few days ago they held 16,000 volumes. Now, after a campaign on Facebook, there are none. Every library user was urged to pick their full entitlement of 15 books, take them away and keep them for a week. The idea was to empty the shelves by closing time on Saturday: in fact with 24 hours to go, the last sad bundle of self-help and practical mechanics books was stamped out. Robert Gifford, chair of Stony Stratford town council, planned to collect his books when he got home from work in London, but left it too late - Guardian

Census: 1911: A Vision of England (UK)

The 1911 census was the 12th national census of the United Kingdom, and in many ways it represented a watershed in the history of census taking in this country - it was the first to use electronic technology and was by far the most intrusive. The census captured a picture of society at the time when the 'upstairs downstairs' world was about to be turned upside down. It records Britain’s 'lost generation' - the 885,000 men who would lose their lives fighting in the war - and it adds a fascinating insight into one of the most important issues of the day, the campaign to give women the vote. In this talk, David Annal introduces the 1911 census and shows what it reveals about society at the time. 2010 National Jewish Book Awards announced

"The Jewish Book Council has announced the winners of the 2010 National Jewish Book Awards, the longest-running North American awards program of its kind in the field of Jewish literature. Given annually since 1948, the awards are designed to recognize outstanding books on Jewish topics each year. Awards are given in sixteen different categories, including debut fiction, scholarship, biography and Holocaust. In addition to the sixteen category awards, special awards will be bestowed this year upon Cynthia Ozick, Gal Beckerman, and Harold Grinspoon. The winners of the 2010 National Jewish Book Awards will be honored on March 9 at a gala awards ceremony to be held at the Center for Jewish History in Manhattan. The awards ceremony, which begins at 8:00 p.m., is free and open to the public. Masters of ceremony for the event are Ari. L. Goldman, author and professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, and Alana Newhouse, editor-in-chief of Tablet Magazine"

Janice Welburn named 2011 ACRL Academic/ Research Librarian of the Year

Janice Welburn, dean of university libraries at Marquette University, is the 2011 Association of College and Research Libraries’ (ACRL) Academic/Research Librarian of the Year. The Story Prize announces its 2010 finalists

The Story Prize has announced three outstanding short story collections chosen from among eighty-five 2010 books that fifty-seven different publishers or imprints entered for the award. The three finalists are:

* Death Is Not an Option by Suzanne Rivecca (W.W. Norton)

The Story Prize's annual event will take place at the New School's Tishman Auditorium in New York City on March 2. That night, the three finalists will read selections from their work, after which Director Larry Dark will interview each writer on-stage. At the end of the event, Founder Julie Lindsey will announce the winner and present that author with $20,000 and an engraved silver bowl. The two runners-up will each receive $5,000

St George's Chapel Library, Windsor Castle loaded on to Copac (UK)

The CWA Dagger in the Library 2011

"Authors like Val McDermid and Ian Rankin are well-known amongst the readers of crime fiction but, beneath the top rank of bestsellers are a host of writers, some new and some who have built loyal followings over the years but who have never quite broken through. It is to give a boost to these authors that the Crime Writers' Association Dagger in the Library Award exists. Again kindly sponsored by the publishers, Random House, the Dagger is awarded to a writer nominated by library users and chosen by a panel of librarians, all of whom work with the public. This year's panel is chaired by Cheney Gardner, Reader and Community Services Manager at Richmond upon Thames Libraries, and includes librarians from throughout the UK. Unlike most other literary prizes, the Dagger in the Library is awarded not for an individual book but for the author's body of work. Last year's winner was Ariana Franklin, the author of the series of historical novels featuring 'Mistress of the Art of Death' Adelia Aguilar. Previous winners have included Colin Cotterill with his books about the National Coroner of Laos, Stuart MacBride and Craig Russell; whilst Lesley Horton and C J Sansom have been Highly Recommended. Nominations for this year's Dagger in the Library Award will close on 1 April 2011

New report, "Cloud-sourcing Research Collections: Managing Print in the Mass-digitized Library Environment"

This report presents findings from a year-long study designed and executed by OCLC Research, the HathiTrust, New York University's Elmer Bobst Library, and the Research Collections Access & Preservation (ReCAP) consortium, with support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The objective of the project was to examine the feasibility of outsourcing management of low-use print books held in academic libraries to shared service providers, including large-scale print and digital repositories. The study assessed the opportunity for library space saving and cost avoidance through the systematic and intentional outsourcing of local management operations for digitized books to shared service providers and progressive downsizing of local print collections in favor of negotiated access to the digitized corpus and regionally consolidated print inventory

Two libraries in East Sussex are to undergo a £95,000 revamp, a local authority has announced. East Sussex County Council said it plans to upgrade facilities at Uckfield and Crowborough libraries. Open Edge event in Scotland

If you are interested in what Open Source software solutions are available to libraries, how they work, and the issues and strategies around their use, then this free event in Edinburgh on 25 and 26 January may be of interest. 'Open Edge' is a two day event on open source software for libraries being run in collaboration with JISC and SCONUL. The first day is 'Haggis and Mash', is a 'Mashed Library event' and will take a very hands-on approach, while the second day covers broader issues, in particular how capacity might be built to enable open source solutions to flourish in HE and FE Libraries

It is also the first ClipNote to use excerpts, many of which are hyperlinked, from more than 60 libraries. For each collection development policy element, the ClipNote provides examples of not only traditional policy language but also examples of unique, forward thinking or strategic language. Costa Book Awards 2010 winners (UK)

Costa has announced the Costa Book Awards 2010 winners in the Novel, First Novel, Biography, Poetry and Children's Book categories. Revealed last night on BBC Radio 4's Front Row programme, they are:

* Novelist and former journalist, Maggie O'Farrell, who wins her first major literary prize with her fifth novel, The Hand That First Held Mine
* Kishwar Desai who takes the First Novel Award for Witness the Night, which explores India's hidden female infanticide and the first book of a series featuring the unconventional female protagonist, Simran Singh
* Potter and ceramic artist, Edmund de Waal, who collects the Biography Award for his highly-acclaimed memoir, The Hare With Amber Eyes, which the judges called 'a truly special book'
* Jo Shapcott who wins the Poetry Award for Of Mutability, her first new work in over a decade in part influenced by her experience of cancer
* Debut writer and web designer, Jason Wallace, who beats best-selling author Jonathan Stroud to claim the Children's Book Award for Out of Shadows

Bittersweet book find for Oxfam volunteer (UK)

"Oxfam volunteer Andrew Chapman has uncovered another valuable volume, but has given the book back to its original owner instead of selling it. Two years ago, Mr Chapman, a rare books specialist for the charity’s bookshop in St Giles, found a scruffy copy of Graham Greene’s Rumour at Nightfall. The first edition of the 1930s novel fetched about £15,000 at auction, the most expensive book Oxfam has ever sold. Now, Mr Chapman, 43, a pilot who flies long-haul routes for Virgin, has made another lucky find after a book was donated anonymously. In the basement of the shop, Mr Chapman discovered a 1556 Italian history of the Dukes of Ferrara called Commentario delle cose di Ferrara. But a tiny stamp at the back of the book indicated it had once belonged to the Royal Society, in London, and Mr Chapman contacted staff so he could return it"

LSSU's 36th annual List of Banished Words

It may have been word of the year in some wheelhouses, but "refudiate" wasn't looked upon favorably by many who sent in nominations for Lake Superior State University's 36th annual List of Words Banished from the Queen's English for Mis-use, Over-use and General Uselessness, which was released on New Year's Eve. In a busy U.S. election year, "the American People" told LSSU they were tired of not only "refudiate," but also "mama grizzlies" who wanted their opponents to "man up." But words and phrases related to technology and the way we communicate dominated the list for 2011, including "viral," "epic," "fail," and the use of websites "Facebook" and "Google" as verbs. "Viral" received the most nominations
