The Plant List

The Plant List is a working list of all known plant species. Version 1, released in December 2010, aims to be comprehensive for species of Vascular plant (flowering plants, conifers, ferns and their allies) and of Bryophytes (mosses and liverworts). It does not include algae or fungi. Version 1 contains 1,244,871 million scientific plant names of which 298,900 are accepted species names. It includes no vernacular or common plant names.

Collaboration between the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and Missouri Botanical Garden enabled the creation of The Plant List by combining multiple checklist datasets held by these institutions and other collaborators.

The Plant List provides the Accepted Latin name for most species, with links to all Synonyms by which that species has been known. It also includes Unresolved names for which the contributing data sources did not contain sufficient evidence to decide whether they were Accepted or Synonyms

The groundbreaking site was an early internet aggregator, which featured links to commentary on arts, literature and events. The site, which was designed to look like an 18th-century broadsheet, quickly gained a loyal following, with The Guardian newspaper dubbing it as the "the best website in the world" in 1999

University of Saskatchewan archive holds treasures (Canada)

University of Saskatchewan archive holds treasures (Canada)"David Bindle pulls on a pair of white gloves and lifts up a manuscript leaf that's hundreds of years old. "I can go back here and every single day discover something new," he says, gently placing the page back into storage, laying it flat in a drawer-like box. A few rows away, a Bible that dates to 1509 sits on a shelf, not far from a 1611 King James version. The oldest complete manuscript in the room was written in 1471, although leaves from incomplete manuscripts in the room date back to the 1100s. Bindle is the special collections librarian at the University of Saskatchewan, a job he considers one of the best in the library. The special collections room on the third floor is closed to the public; librarians fetch items needed by researchers and students. Many of the shelves are dominated by books with covers of brown, red, black and beige shades, although others have books and magazines in a rainbow of colours, neatly arranged and catalogued. The whole room smells of books. Pages upon pages of books"

National Archives launches Online Public Access System (USA)

"The National Archives and Records Administration's new Online Public Access prototype is being made available to the public. The National Archives' flagship initiative in our Open Government plan is to develop online services to meet the 21st century needs of the public. It is also a key component of our agency's Transformation Plan, to be customer-focused and ensuring our nation’s heritage is accessible to all. The Online Public Access prototype is the public portal that provides access to digitized records, and information about our records. It also provides a centralized means of searching multiple National Archives resources at once. Currently, researchers perform separate searches in the Archival Research Catalog (ARC) for catalog descriptions, histories and biographies; Access to Archival Databases (AAD) for electronic records; and Archives.gov. The new interface illustrates a streamlined search experience for users, searching across all of these resources"

Day of protest planned against library closures (UK)

Day of protest planned against library closures (UK)"Library campaigners are proposing a co-ordinated day of protest in February over the mass closures announced for the service since the government's comprehensive spending review. More than 350 libraries are currently threatened with closure, according to an online survey, with 26 mobile library services also earmarked to face the axe. The number is rising weekly as more councils come forward with cost-cutting proposals, with estimates that 800-1,000 libraries will soon be at risk. Protesters, already active in local areas where major cuts are threatened, including Doncaster, Lewisham and Gloucestershire, will hold "read-ins" at selected branches, with speeches by concerned readers, authors, trade unionists, librarians and councillors"

Great War Archive rolled out in Germany

The German National Library, Oxford University and Europeana have signed an agreement to digitise family papers and memorabilia from the First World War. The collaboration will bring German soldiers' stories online alongside their British counterparts in a 1914-18 archive. JISC planted the seed in 2008 when it funded the The Great War Archive1 which is run by Oxford University Computing Services. People across Britain contributed family letters, photographs and keepsakes from the War to be digitised. The success of the idea has encouraged Europeana, Europe's digital archive, library and museum, to bring the German National Library into an alliance with Oxford University to roll out the scheme in Germany. Alastair Dunning, JISC digitisation programme manager, says: "We are delighted that its initial funding in the Great War Archive has now blossomed to expand on the European dimension of the original project. The inclusion of German narrative in this current will not only provide valuable material for teachers and researchers, but help strengthen the joint understanding of the Great War"

Wellcome Library Item of the Month, December 2010: The London Monster

Wellcome Library Item of the Month, December 2010: The London Monster"On December 14 in 1790, this man, Rhynwick Williams, a young unemployed Welshman was convicted of three counts of assault and sentenced to six years in prison. This - seemingly - brought to an end a sequence of attacks on women in London over the previous two years. Images from the Wellcome Library's collections will help us tell this rather odd story. There were over 50 reported, seemingly linked, attacks on women in London between 1788 and 1790. Whilst some women received deep wounds, it does not appear the aim of their assailant was to cause life threatening injuries - the attacker at times seemed as concerned with slashing the garments of the women as stabbing them. Often he would attempt to stab the women in the buttocks, sometimes those attacked reported they were offered a nosegay to sniff, out of which a sharp instrument would emerge and at least one report suggested the attacker approached a woman with sharp instruments attached to his knees. The description of the assailant also wildly differed..."

U.S. National Archives issues new report on Nazi war crimes

The National Archives has released to Congress a new report on Nazi War Crimes: Hitler's Shadow: Nazi War Criminals, U.S. Intelligence, and the Cold War. The report is based on findings from newly-declassified decades-old Army and CIA records released under the Nazi War Crimes Disclosure Act of 1998, these records were processed and reviewed by the National Archives-led Nazi War Crimes and Japanese Imperial Government Records Interagency Working Group, and written by IWG historians Richard Breitman and Norman J.W. Goda. The report highlights materials opened under the Act, in addition to records that were previously opened but had not been mined by historians and researchers, including records from the Office of Strategic Services (a CIA predecessor), dossiers of the Army Staff's Intelligence Records of the Investigative Records Repository (IRR), State Department records, and files of the Navy Judge Advocate General. Hitler's Shadow augments the IWG's 2005 final report to Congress, U.S. Intelligence and the Nazis, and includes wartime and postwar US intelligence documents on the search for and prosecution of Nazi war criminals; Allied protection or use of Nazi war criminals; and the postwar activities of war criminals both in the United States and abroad

In tapes, Nixon rails about Jews and Blacks (USA)

In tapes, Nixon rails about Jews and Blacks (USA)"Richard M. Nixon made disparaging remarks about Jews, blacks, Italian-Americans and Irish-Americans in a series of extended conversations with top aides and his personal secretary, recorded in the Oval Office 16 months before he resigned as president. The remarks were contained in 265 hours of recordings, captured by the secret taping system Nixon had installed in the White House and released this week by the Nixon Presidential Library and Museum. While previous recordings have detailed Nixon's animosity toward Jews, including those who served in his administration like Henry A. Kissinger, his national security adviser, these tapes suggest an added layer of complexity to Nixon's feeling. He and his aides seem to make a distinction between Israeli Jews, whom Nixon admired, and American Jews" - New York Times

New Strategies for Digital Content Conference (UK)

New Strategies for Digital Content Conference: This one-day conference, 18 March 2011, focuses on some of the key strategic issues faced by content creators and publishers today and which were addressed by the JISC eContent programme 2009-2011, in particular:

- the need for institutions to develop the necessary skills and strategies to embed digitisation within institutional strategies and practices as well as devise effective business models for the long term sustainability of digitised content

The day will bring together a mixture of national and international speakers and representatives of the projects funded under the JISC eContent programme to discuss current challenges and opportunities

The conference will be held at Goodenough College, London, UK

Library and Archives Canada announces suite of digital services for Canadians by 2017

"Within the next seven years, Library and Archives Canada will put most of its services online, transforming the country's leading memory institution into a fully engaged digital organization, just in time to celebrate Confederation's 150th anniversary in 2017. 'Taking advantage of new digital information technologies will change not only the way we acquire and preserve our collection but also how we make it accessible to Canadians.' explained Dr. Daniel J. Caron, Librarian and Archivist of Canada. 'The digital environment is also providing us with opportunities to enhance our services to other documentary heritage institutions. This makes sense from both the client service and business practice perspectives – to stay relevant, we must move forward.' As part of an overall strategy designed to provide more online public access, LAC will take a multi-faceted approach: adapting services and transforming business processes to make access easier, and increasing online content by switching to digital formats"

Nearly 2,000 poignant letters in several different languages from or to prisoners in Dachau, Buchenwald and Auschwitz, as well as in Gestapo prisons and POW camps, comprise much of the collection's material. In many instances there are 20 letters or more written by the same prisoner, an uncommon feature in such a collection when often only a single letter survives. There is also a diary of the Nazi evacuation from Ravensbrück (women's concentration camp) as well as a hand-fashioned recipe book which prisoners exchanged among themselves. This collection also includes books, posters, magazines, newspapers and air-drop leaflets

Long-lost Da Vinci code discovered in French library

A coded fragment of writing by Leonardo da Vinci has been discovered in a library in Nantes in western France after languishing in an archive for nearly 150 years. Experts have yet to decipher the text because it is written right to left in Leonardo's trademark mirror-writing style and the words are arcane 15th century Italian and other languages. The artist wrote most of his notes back to front, from left to right and reversing each letter, only using standard writing if he intended documents to be read by others. The yellowed scrap of manuscript was among 5000 documents donated to Nantes in 1872 by a wealthy collector
