"The University of Portsmouth Library has won the Solent Design Award for best new building on the south coast. The 'green' building was voted best by a panel of expert judges and also won the People's Choice vote cast online by about 700 people, making it a clear winner. It is the fourth time the University library has won the hearts and minds of a range of design and architecture competition judges. It has a host of 'green' credentials including natural ventilation and a sedum roof which filters rainwater which is then used to flush the toilets. Projects jostling to win the best designed building in the Solent region included a school, an art gallery, a gateway to Southampton city and a major housing development. The competition was run to help promote the quality of places and not limited to the actual building, but the way people interact with and use the building"
