Library and Archives Canada has announced the launch of a new online database, "Medals, Honours and Awards". Through this online database, researchers can access more than 113,000 references to medal registers, citation cards and records of various military awards. In addition to archival references, this research tool includes digitized images of some medal registers

In tapes, Nixon rails about Jews and Blacks (USA)

"Richard M. Nixon made disparaging remarks about Jews, blacks, Italian-Americans and Irish-Americans in a series of extended conversations with top aides and his personal secretary, recorded in the Oval Office 16 months before he resigned as president. The remarks were contained in 265 hours of recordings, captured by the secret taping system Nixon had installed in the White House and released this week by the Nixon Presidential Library and Museum. While previous recordings have detailed Nixon's animosity toward Jews, including those who served in his administration like Henry A. Kissinger, his national security adviser, these tapes suggest an added layer of complexity to Nixon's feeling. He and his aides seem to make a distinction between Israeli Jews, whom Nixon admired, and American Jews" - New York Times

- the need for institutions to develop the necessary skills and strategies to embed digitisation within institutional strategies and practices as well as devise effective business models for the long term sustainability of digitised content

- the need to break down silos of content by clustering existing and complementary digitised resources and enhancing their offerings, thus making them more relevant and usable for target users

The day will bring together a mixture of national and international speakers and representatives of the projects funded under the JISC eContent programme to discuss current challenges and opportunities

"Within the next seven years, Library and Archives Canada will put most of its services online, transforming the country's leading memory institution into a fully engaged digital organization, just in time to celebrate Confederation's 150th anniversary in 2017. 'Taking advantage of new digital information technologies will change not only the way we acquire and preserve our collection but also how we make it accessible to Canadians.' explained Dr. Daniel J. Changes at The Library of Michigan (USA)

Due to significant reductions in the Library of Michigan's operations funding and staffing, the Library is implementing the following changes:

1) Materials from the Library of Michigan's collections will be available for in-library use only. As of January 3, 2011, circulation of these items will be offered on a limited basis to state government employees to conduct state business. The Library of Michigan collections will be available to the general public for use in the library.

2) The Library of Michigan no longer will borrow materials from other libraries (interlibrary loan) for public patrons starting January 3, 2011. This service will continue to be available for state government employees as it relates to their state work.

3) The Library of Michigan will not be a participating MeLCat library beginning January 3, 2011. Public and state government patrons currently using MeLCat through the Library of Michigan should talk with their local library about MeLCat participation.

4) Beginning January 1, 2011 the Library of Michigan will be open to the public Monday through Friday and will be closed on Saturday and Sunday.

Nixon library to release 265 hours of White House tapes (USA)

"On Thursday December 9, 2010, the National Archives Nixon Library in Yorba Linda, California, will open 265 hours of White House Tapes, over 140,000 pages of presidential records and 75 hours of video oral histories. The materials will be available in the Nixon Library research room at 9 a.m. PDT. All of the White House tapes and selected documents will be available online. The released White House tapes cover conversations from February and March 1973 and a few from early April 1973. There are no transcripts for these tapes, but the Library has produced a detailed subject log for each conversation. These tapes cover a large number of subjects including the ceasefire in Vietnam, the release of American Prisoners of War, Watergate, U.S. policy in the Middle East, the assassination of two U.S. diplomats in Sudan by the Black September Organization, the state visits of King Hussein of Jordan and Prime Minister Golda Meir of Israel, the Wounded Knee incident, and Wage and Price controls. Also in this release are nearly 2500 pages of formerly classified national security records including documents on US policy toward Chile and formerly classified materials from the files of White House aides H. R. 'Bob' Haldeman and John Ehrlichman"

JISC Collections has announced a new agreement from Cairn which offers access to
Cairn Collections. Cairn Collections offers a comprehensive selection of French language online journals and ebooks collections. The complete collection contains over 230 journals and around 1,500 ebooks in the humanities and social sciences, with over 100,000 articles / chapters in full-text format. The site is updated each time a journal or a book is published for the collections proposed

Waterstone's and The Reading Agency announce new partnership (UK)

Waterstone's, and independent charity The Reading Agency are to work together in partnership to build links between libraries and bookshops. The focus of the partnership will to be to raise the profile of books and reading across the country, by forging local partnerships that speak directly to readers that use bookshops and libraries

Lewisham joins the London Libraries Consortium (UK)

"The London Borough of Lewisham becomes the 13th member of the London Libraries Consortium, bringing the number of residents in the consortium area to over 3 million. From March 2011 Lewisham's 250,000 residents will be able to access the consortium's shared library management system (LMS) from any internet-enabled computer, iPhone or via a library computer. The Borough is implementing the consortium's LMS, Axiell's OpenGalaxy, in just five months, so that its residents can gain access to over 5 million items held by consortium members as quickly as possible"

Springer Partners with the LOCKSS Program

The LOCKSS Program has announced Springer's participation in the Global LOCKSS Network. Springer has committed for LOCKSS preservation nearly 42,000 e-books; more than 2000 e-journals, 174 eReference works, and 22,000 Protocols. By implementing a library ownership model, Springer is enabling libraries to fulfill a core library mission - to build and preserve digital library collections

Launch of "Upper Canada Land Board"

Library and Archives Canada has announced the launch of a new online database, "Upper Canada Land Board (1765–1804)." Through this online database, researchers can access more than 16,000 references to documents of the Upper Canada Land Board between 1765 and 1804. The Land Boards were created in 1789 to oversee land matters and facilitate settlement in the districts of Hesse, Luneburg, Mecklenburg and Nassau. This territory is now part of the province of Ontario

Bill Bryson wins 2010 Educational Writers' Award

The Authors' Licensing & Collecting Society (ALCS) and the Society of Authors have announced that Bill Bryson had been awarded the 2010 Educational Writers' Award for A Really Short History of Nearly Everything, abridged and edited by Felicia Law. The award was made at the All Party Writers Group (APWG) Winter Reception at the House of Commons by Lord Hill, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Schools, who presented a £2,000 cheque to the winners.
Bryson, who shared the cash prize with Felicia Law who worked with him to abridge and edit the work opening it to a new age group, said of the award "I am honoured to be considered for this award. Any initiative that encourages young people to read is obviously to be applauded"

Bird book sets new world record at London auction

A rare copy of John James Audubon's 'Birds of America' set a new world record for a printed book at auction Tuesday, selling for 7.3 million pounds in London, Sotheby's auctioneers said. The four-volume book was subject to competitive bidding on the phones and in Sotheby's New Bond Street galleries, and sold for 7,321,250 pounds (11,542,683 dollars, 8,647,111 euros), the auction house said in a statement. Originally estimated to sell for between four and six million pounds, the book was bought by London dealer Michael Tollemache

Through this online database, researchers can access references to baptisms, marriages and burials inscribed in church records held at Library and Archives Canada. This database will expand slowly over the next few years as more references are added

Gale to digitize McMaster University's Holocaust and Resistance Collections

Gale and McMaster University have announced an agreement for Gale to digitize McMaster University's collection of materials related to the Holocaust, propaganda and the Jewish underground resistance movement during the Second World War. "The depth and importance of the McMaster collection make it one of the leading Holocaust and Resistance archives in the world," said Jim Draper, vice president and publisher, Gale. "We are proud to have the opportunity to digitize these invaluable documents - and to make them available to a wider audience - so that students and researchers, no matter their location, can access these extraordinary materials that are crucial to a full understanding of the magnitude of the Holocaust and the period of the Second World War." The Holocaust collection covers the period between 1933 and 1945, when millions of people were imprisoned and died in Nazi concentration camps throughout Europe. Nearly 2,000 poignant letters in several different languages from or to prisoners in Dachau, Buchenwald and Auschwitz, as well as in Gestapo prisons and POW camps, comprise much of the collection's material. In many instances there are 20 letters or more written by the same prisoner, an uncommon feature in such a collection when often only a single letter survives. There is also a diary of the Nazi evacuation from Ravensbrück (women's concentration camp) as well as a hand-fashioned recipe book which prisoners exchanged among themselves. This collection also includes books, posters, magazines, newspapers and air-drop leaflets

Long-lost Da Vinci code discovered in French library

A coded fragment of writing by Leonardo da Vinci has been discovered in a library in Nantes in western France after languishing in an archive for nearly 150 years. Experts have yet to decipher the text because it is written right to left in Leonardo's trademark mirror-writing style and the words are arcane 15th century Italian and other languages. The artist wrote most of his notes back to front, from left to right and reversing each letter, only using standard writing if he intended documents to be read by others. The yellowed scrap of manuscript was among 5000 documents donated to Nantes in 1872 by a wealthy collector

Press+ helps college newspapers generate revenue

Press+, the e-commerce platform created by Journalism Online that enables digital news publishers to collect revenue from readers, has announced that it is adding additional services aimed at helping college newspapers generate income from avid off-campus readers, such as alumni and parents. The Daily O'Collegian of Oklahoma State University will be the first college publication to launch the system on its website, ocolly.com, in early 2011. The paper will collect a small fee from online readers who are outside the school's immediate geographic area and who do not use an email address with an .edu affiliation and who read the paper online more than three times a month. This is achieved by deploying two aspects of the Press+ platform in tandem: the "meter" technology combined with "geo-targeting" technology

E.T. Bryant Memorial Prize (UK/Ireland)

The E.T. Bryant Memorial Prize is awarded to a student of Library and Information Science, or to a librarian in their first five years in music librarianship, for a significant contribution to the literature of music librarianship. Publication does not preclude entry. The prize is GBP250, awarded jointly by IAML(UK & Irl) and the Music Libraries Trust, at the IAML(UK & Irl) Annual General Meeting. Applicants must be resident in the UK or Republic of Ireland during the year of entry. The E.T. Bryant Committee reserve the right not to award the prize in any one year. The closing date for entries is 12th December 2010

Don Kerr: new Poet Laureate of Saskatchewan

"Don Kerr of Saskatoon is the new Poet Laureate of Saskatchewan. Kerr's term will begin January 1, 2011 and will run until December 31, 2012. The official inauguration will take place on January 10, 2011 at Government House at 7:00 p.m. Don Kerr is a poet, dramatist, fiction and non-fiction writer living in Saskatoon. Kerr has published nine books of poetry, with the most recent, The Dust of Just Beginning, being shortlisted for the 2010 Saskatchewan Book Awards. His plays have been produced at the 25th Street Theatre and at the Greystone. He has had extensive editorial experience and on the boards of Coteau Books and NeWest Press, as press editor for books of poetry and politics, and has been a mentor to emerging writers on Grain. The selection committee is enthusiastic in their recommendation of Kerr. They note not only the skill of his poetry, but also his work in the literary community: 'He is devoted to the province of Saskatchewan and celebrates the place and the people through many of his writings. Kerr has received the Saskatchewan Order of Merit and has dedicated himself to the history of his city and his province.' Kerr is the fourth person to hold the title of Poet Laureate; his three predecessors were Glen Sorestad (2000—2004), Louise B. Halfe (2005—2006), and Robert Currie (2007-2010)

Hosted version of EZproxy now available from OCLC

OCLC EZproxy is now available as a hosted service. So you no longer have to maintain all the database tables and configuration files yourself, unless you just like doing it. Five libraries have been in pilot with the hosted service since April 2009, and they've helped the cooperative work out any kinks in the system. EZproxy now joins other OCLC services available as hosted versions, including CONTENTdm and ILLiad

Seventh Annual ARL Leadership Symposium

The Association of Research Libraries will host its Seventh Annual Leadership Symposium for master of library and information science (MLIS) students on Saturday and Sunday, January 8 and 9, 2011, in San Diego, CA. The Leadership Symposium curriculum will focus on topics related to the major strategic areas of ARL, as well as transitioning into, and building career networks in, research libraries. The program will include presentations from ARL program officers as well as human resource professionals in ARL member libraries. Registration for this event is open to any MLIS student free of charge, but space is limited

"Four more volumes of the Victoria County History of Somerset are now live. Literary Review's Bad Sex in Fiction Award 2010 (UK) winner announced

Rowan Somerville is the winner of the eighteenth annual Literary Review Bad Sex in Fiction Award. The prize was awarded for passages from his second novel, The Shape of Her. He was presented with the award by Michael Winner on Monday 29 November at a ceremony in St James's Square. 'There is nothing more English than bad sex,' said Somerville, whose first novel, The End of Sleep, was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writers' Prize. 'So on behalf of the nation, I thank you.' The judges' minds were made up by sentences such as: 'Like a lepidopterist mounting a tough-skinned insect with a too blunt pin he screwed himself into her'

New exhibition: 'Shelley’s Ghost: Reshaping the Image of a Literary Family'

The Bodleian Libraries' Winter exhibition opens to the public this Friday, 3 December. It is organised in partnership with The New York Public Library and is dedicated to one of the most renowned literary families in Britain: Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822), his wife Mary Shelley (1797-1851), and Mary's parents, William Godwin (1756-1836) and Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797)

OCLC publishes 43rd annual report to the membership

In the report, Jay Jordan, OCLC President and Chief Executive Officer, wrote that fiscal 2010 was a momentous year. Members of the OCLC cooperative adopted a new policy for use of WorldCat records and completed the transition to a new, global governance structure. Participation in OCLC services continued at strong levels. The WorldCat database grew at an extraordinary rate. At the same time, the cooperative launched new services that strengthen libraries and help reduce their costs. Fifteen libraries and consortia are featured in the report, which is being mailed to OCLC member libraries and partners in December
