40% of university libraries plan cuts to book and journal purchases next year (UK)
"Academics should brace themselves for "severe" cuts in access to new books and journals in the next academic year as higher costs caused by the fall in the value of the pound put libraries under pressure. Times Higher Education reported in January that the drop in the pound's value was having a "crippling effect" on the budgets of UK university libraries, which faced huge increases in subscriptions costs for research journals from the US and elsewhere in Europe. Now a new survey of 38 university libraries conducted by the Research Information Network (RIN) reveals just how serious the situation is. Preliminary findings presented to Times Higher Education show that although the current academic year has been "financially challenging", it is in 2009-10 that the pinch will really be felt. - THE

LISTen: The LISNews.org Podcast - Episode #72. "This week's podcast is going to sound perhaps a little different. We were testing out our field equipment profile in a new location. I was dog-sitting a bull dog and her puppies so the usual recording location was a no go. The episode starts off with the zeitgeist review. Per usual, we look at the week's top ten stories by hits and by comments and bring you the lower half of each. The LISNews daily e-mails (you are subscribed to them, aren't you?) typically bring you the first half. After that we relay three stories from Radio New Zealand International. As the crisis in Fiji continues to heat up, press freedoms are being curtailed and journalists are being jailed. The three stories relate to how the knowledge ecology is being fundamentally altered in the island nation by the military regime presently in power so as to stamp out dissent. Fiji was a Westminster-style parliamentary democracy as recently as December 2006. With the relay out of the way, discussion of the recent Google and Twitter issues is presented from the perspective of libraries operating within the overall reach of their funding agencies. The concept of Service Level Agreements is raised and discussed. That piece has been made available for licensing on Public Radio Exchange". Previous Podcasts can be found here

Common Chemistry
"Common Chemistry from Chemical Abstracts Service is a web resource that contains CAS Registry Numbers for approximately 7,800 chemicals of widespread general public interest. Common Chemistry is helpful to non-chemists who know either a name or CAS Registry Number of a common chemical and want to pair both pieces of information. The CAS Registry Number is the universally recognized unique identifier of chemical substances and is often found on packaging and on articles of commerce. While not a comprehensive CAS Registry Number lookup service, Common Chemistry does provide a way to quickly and easily find names or CAS Registry Numbers for chemicals of general interest. CAS has collaborated with Wikipedia in developing this resource and encourages you to use the Wikipedia link (when available) or other sources of general information on chemistry, to learn more about these chemicals"

Anthony Zuiker's 'Level 26' marks origin of the 'digi-novel'
Anthony Zuiker, creator of the hit TV series CSI and its two spinoffs, says his new multimedia "digi-novel" will launch a "revolution in publishing for the YouTube generation." Level 26: Dark Origins, to be published by Dutton Sept. 8, is the first in a series in which each book will be supplemented with 20 videos, or "cyber-bridges," featuring actors playing characters from the novel. The series, written with Duane Swierczynski, features a rogue investigator who hunts serial killers. The title refers to 25 levels used by law enforcement to classify serial killers. Zuiker vows to introduce readers - and viewers - to level 26. After every 20 pages or so, readers will be able to go online to watch a three-minute video. The videos are designed, Zuiker says, "to embellish the novel and drive readers to the next book." - USA Today

After 400 years, health and safety bans stepladders from historic Oxford library...but nobody can reach the books
"Stepladders have been banned from part of Oxford University's historic Bodleian library - because of health and safety fears. The ruling by officials means that students cannot use items on the higher shelves of the Duke Humfrey reading room. However, the university is standing its ground and refusing to move the books from their 'original historic location' on the room's balcony. As a result of the stalemate, students have to travel to libraries as far away as London to view other copies" - Mail

Mystery Beatles lyric is a dream display at the British Library
A previously unseen George Harrison lyric, found by author and collector Hunter Davies, goes on display at the British Library. Written in early 1967 when George was aged 23 or 24, the untitled song was penned at a time when The Beatles had stopped touring to spend more time in the studio to work on what would arguably become their most famous record, Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The Beatles are still one of the world's greatest bands, almost 40 years after their split. Hunter Davies found the lyric during his research for a new edition of The Beatles official biography, which has just been re released more than 40 years after its original publication. In its introduction, Hunter recalls how he collected Beatles lyrics discarded as scrap paper from the floor of Abbey Road studio and kept them as souvenirs. It's almost certain that they would have been thrown out by the cleaners if he hadn't picked them up

The Romantic Era Redefined is live
"Through a partnership with London-based publisher Pickering & Chatto, students and scholars have access to important primary texts for the study of Romantic-era literature and social history - with more than 87,000 pages of Pickering & Chatto's esteemed critical editions. The collection also includes additional content from other publishers, archives, the leading Romanticism journal, The Wordsworth Circle, and other sources never-before-available online. Besides the literature - poetry, novels, short fiction, and drama - there are letters, diaries, conduct literature, speeches, travel narratives, political writings, philosophical works, theological and sociological writings, and more. Featuring work from writers in Britain, the British Empire, and North America, the collection is particularly strong in its coverage of the Romantic Era's "second generation," which spans the years from 1800 to 1830. The Romantic Era Redefined brings something distinctly new to academic study, with access to overlooked and inaccessible important works" - Alexander Street Press
A snapshot of 1911 Britain
"Among the paintings and drawings, musical works and advertisements that make up the records series COPY 1 are well over 100,000 photographs. Volunteers from the Friends of The National Archives have now provided online Catalogue descriptions of those registered for copyright in 1911 – over 2,700 in total. The many images of urban and rural life and long-disappeared vistas will be of interest to both local and family historians, providing context to social and family research. Engineering feats and disasters are covered, along with the coronation celebrations for Edward VII, the Empire exhibition at Crystal Palace, and images of music hall stars. Sportsmen and women are also featured, including boxers (one photograph includes Jack Johnson – the 'Galveston Giant'), rugby players, footballers and T. W. Burgess, who swam the Channel for the first time since Captain Webb in 1875."

Elsevier admits journal error
"Elsevier, the world's leading scientific publisher, said it had failed to meet its own standards for "accuracy and transparency" in producing a publication sponsored by Merck, the US pharmaceutical group, but presented as an independent academic journal. The Australasian Journal of Bone and Joint Medicine, complete with an honorary editorial board of academics from Australia and New Zealand, contained a selection of reprinted articles from other journals concerning Merck's medicines Fosamax and Vioxx, and no disclosure that it was funded by the company. The publication marks a fresh twist in tactics to promote medicines by pharmaceutical companies, which have long provided substantial income to academic journals by paying for large numbers of reprints of articles favourable to their drugs for distribution to doctors. However, the Australasian Journal of Bone and Joint Medicine, which was produced in several issues between 2003 and 2005, has no website and is not listed as a journal in standard depositories of academic literature such as the Medline database" - FT
