"Following an open procurement process, JISC Collections is making four journal archives freely available to all colleges, universities and research councils in the UK. These archives from the American Chemical Society, Brill Academic Publishers, ProQuest, and Taylor & Francis include 230 peer reviewed journals with some of the most important articles in the arts, built environment, humanities, life sciences, physical sciences and the social sciences. JISC Collections' purchase of these archives means that researchers, teaching staff and students can now have free access to more than 150 years of content and over 800,000 fully searchable articles"

Medieval literary treasures to go online
Manchester University's John Rylands Library will be digitising much of its renowned collection of medieval manuscripts, including parts of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. The project, funded by the the Joint Information Systems Committee, will allow widespread access to the works online. Staff will begin to scan the pages using a high definition camera in October and the results will be available by late 2009

In conjunction with the American Library Association Midwinter Meeting in Denver, the Association of Research Libraries will host its Fifth Annual Leadership Institute for MLS students on January 24 and 25, 2009. The Leadership Institute will focus on issues related to transitioning into, and building career networks in, research libraries. The program will include guest presentations from library leaders and former ARL Diversity Scholars. Registration for this event is open to any MLS student free of charge

"Eight leading biomedical research funding organisations, including Government bodies, Research Councils and Charities, have approved funding to further develop the UK PubMed Central website over the next three years. The development will be carried out by the British Library, the University of Manchester and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory's European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), in close consultation with the UK's biomedical and health researchers. Twenty-five libraries selected to host "Pride and Passion" traveling exhibit
"The American Library Association Public Programs Office, in association with the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, has announced that 25 libraries have been selected to host Pride and Passion: The African American Baseball Experience, a traveling exhibition telling the story of black baseball players in the U.S. over the past century and a half. The National Endowment for the Humanities provided major funding to the ALA Public Programs Office for the traveling exhibition. Pride and Passion is based upon a permanent exhibition of the same name on display at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, Cooperstown, N.Y."

DRAMBORA toolkit
"The Digital Curation Centre and DigitalPreservationEurope have announced the release of the Digital Repository Audit Method Based on Risk Assessment (DRAMBORA) toolkit. This toolkit is intended to facilitate internal audit by providing repository administrators with a means to assess their capabilities, identify their weaknesses, and recognise their strengths. Digital repositories are still in their infancy and this model is designed to be responsive to the rapidly developing landscape. The development of the toolkit follows a concentrated period of repository pilot audits undertaken by the DCC, conducted at a diverse range of organisations including national libraries, scientific data centres and cultural and heritage data archives"

British Library acquires the Dering Roll
"The Dering Roll, the oldest extant English roll of arms, dating from c. 1270-1280, has been acquired by the British Library following a successful fundraising campaign. The Roll depicts 324 coats of arms, approximately a quarter of the entire English baronage during the reign of King Edward I, making it a vital record for the study of knighthood in medieval England. The Dering Roll was acquired with the aid of the National Heritage Memorial Fund (£100,000), The Art Fund, the UK's leading independent art charity' (GBP40,000), Friends of the British Library (GBP10,000), Friends of the National Libraries (GBP10,000) and numerous donations from individual supporters"
