Park and Read a novel idea for bus passengers

"Norwich Park and Ride passengers are being invited to 'sit back and enjoy the read' next week as part of an innovative Norfolk County Council (UK) scheme to encourage book borrowing and library use. From June 2, Airport Park and Ride customers will be able to borrow a book on board any of the buses, returning it to any Norfolk County Council Library at a later date. Each bus will carry about 30 or so books, with a mixture of fiction, non-fiction and children's books on offer to passengers to brighten their journey. The 'Park and Read' scheme, which runs throughout June, is a pilot project between Norfolk County Council and the New Writing Partnership"

This book recently has been digitized and made available for viewing via "page-turner" display or searchable .pdf. The Polish Poster describes over 130 posters drawn from the Library of Congress' collection of approximately 3,000 Polish posters created between the years 1900-1945. The 130 posters are grouped into six time periods and then listed alphabetically, by artist, within each period. The mass digitisation of 19th century literature in partnership with Microsoft is one of fifteen British Library-led digitisation initiatives, currently taking place. As part of the 19th century book project, the British Library has now successfully digitised 40,000 out-of-copyright items from its collections, including a range of authors such as Dickens, Eliot, Trollope and Hardy as well as many forgotten literary gems. It is our intention that the material will be made available on the Library’s catalogue after the completion of a pilot, which is currently providing access to over 1,100 books with more added on an incremental basis from St Pancras Reading Rooms"

"The Association of Research Libraries has published the ARL Preservation Statistics 2005–06, a compilation of data on the levels of preservation efforts in ARL member libraries throughout North America. Highlights from the report suggest that preservation expenditures are in a steady state. In 2004–05, 107 ARL libraries reported expenditures of $99,931,352. In 2005–06, 111 ARL libraries reported $8 million more spent, an 8% increase from the previous year"

ALPSP Awards 2008

The Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers is offering two awards for 2008: the Award for Publishing Innovation and the Award for Best New Journal. They will be judged by a panel of experts chaired by Richard Gedye of Oxford Journals. The judges will consider all the applications and then draw up a shortlist for each award.
Representatives of the shortlisted applications will be invited to give a 15-minute presentation to the judges in Oxford on 22 July. The winners will be announced at the Awards Dinner on 11 September

"Booktrust, in association with Children's Laureate Michael Rosen, has announced the inaugural Roald Dahl Funny Prize. This exciting new prize has two categories - the funniest book for children aged six and under, and the funniest book for children aged seven to fourteen. Fiction, non-fiction and poetry will be welcomed. A panel of five judges will be chaired by Michael Rosen; the other judges are Sophie Dahl, Dara O'Briain, Chris Riddell and one other. The judges will select a shortlist of six books in each category in early September to tie in with the third Roald Dahl Day on 13 September. The winner of each category will receive GBP2,500, which will be presented at an awards ceremony in London in November 2008"

HarperCollins Publishers has announced "the creation of an in-house internet broadcast studio. Modeled on a newsroom environment, the studio has been developed to create author videos for sales, marketing and promotional opportunities. The studio represents the next step in HarperCollins' ongoing digital efforts. Independent Foreign Fiction Prize winner announced

This year's Independent Foreign Fiction Prize, the UK's leading award for contemporary literature in translation, has been won by the Belgian-born scientist and novelist Paul Verhaeghen for his novel Omega Minor. C&RL preprints go open access

College & Research Libraries (C&RL), the bi-monthly scholarly journal of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), has announced the launch of an open access, pre-publication service for accepted articles. The pre-print service, which made its debut in March 2008, moved to an open access model in an effort to make timely new research articles available to a wider audience. C&RL pre-print articles are now freely available on the ACRL Website

Primary Research Group has published Library Use of E-books, 2008-09 Edition. "Data in the report is based on a survey of 75 academic, public and special libraries. Librarians detail their plans on how they plan to develop their e-book collections, what they think of e-book readers and software, and which e-book aggregators and publishers appeal to them most and why. Winner of CILIP's Anthony Thompson Award 2008

The winner is Raj Kumar Gandharba, recently promoted as Executive Director of the non-government organisation the Jana Utthan Pratishan in Nepal. Raj's work includes management of Community Learning Centres with special importance given to the underprivileged Dalit peoples. The Award was created by Anthony Thompson, first full-time Secretary General of IFLA (International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions) from 1962 to 1979, when on his death he bequeathed money to bring young librarians to the UK to study UK library and information work
