Pupils set to discover 1911 census online

Pupils set to discover 1911 census online"Free access to the 1911 census is being provided to every school in England and Wales, as part of the biggest census project ever completed within education. The collaborative project will give 15 million pupils a chance to delve into the history books and research their local area to see what life was like in 1911 and before. There are 5,000 images available to view dating from the 1850s, along with over 80 film clips from the early 20th century and 36 million census records from 1911. Andrew Payne, Head of Education and Outreach at The National Archives, one of the project partners, said: 'This is a tremendous opportunity for all students in the country to investigate the history of the streets where they live and to piece it together from original sources. As custodians of the nation's official memory we have been working to widen access to our collection for over a decade through similar education outreach programmes and this project now brings the census directly into every school in the country, benefiting some 15 million students'"
