"Residents in the village of Thorganby, near York, have come up with a novel use for their old phone box. They've converted their bright red kiosk into a book exchange. The former phone box is open all day, every day. People can simply help themselves to a book they fancy, replacing it with one they've read. Thorganby's book exchange is not the first imaginative way of using a redundant phone box. Settle converted theirs into an art gallery. Over recent years many people have mourned the passing of the traditional bright red phone box. Falling demand and the growth of mobile phones has prompted BT to remove more and more public payphones. The famous K6 or Jubilee kiosk was designed by Gilbert Scott and was launched in 1936. It commemorated the 1935 Silver Jubilee of King George V. Recognising their popularity, BT launched the 'Adopt a Kiosk' scheme. Local communities can takeover their phone box after BT removes the payphone equipment. Both Settle Town Council and the Parish Council in Thorganby acquired their phone boxes under this scheme"
