After the chat with Bacon, a reading of the proposed Megan Meier Cyberbullying Prevention Act is presented. A brief round-up of comment out there on the bill currently in the United States House of Representatives is also raised. Following that further coverage of censorship in Fiji is presented through the relay of reports by Radio New Zealand International. Several days in the making, the public can view the monks' progress today and Thursday from noon to 8 p.m., and Friday from 1 to 6 p.m. A closing ceremony will be at 2 p.m. Saturday when the sand will be carried in a procession from the library to RiverScape, where it will be dispersed in the Great Miami River"

Anthony Zuiker's 'Level 26' marks origin of the 'digi-novel'

Anthony Zuiker, creator of the hit TV series CSI and its two spinoffs, says his new multimedia "digi-novel" will launch a "revolution in publishing for the YouTube generation." Level 26: Dark Origins, to be published by Dutton Sept. 8, is the first in a series in which each book will be supplemented with 20 videos, or "cyber-bridges," featuring actors playing characters from the novel. The series, written with Duane Swierczynski, features a rogue investigator who hunts serial killers. The title refers to 25 levels used by law enforcement to classify serial killers. Zuiker vows to introduce readers - and viewers - to level 26. After every 20 pages or so, readers will be able to go online to watch a three-minute video. The videos are designed, Zuiker says, "to embellish the novel and drive readers to the next book." - USA Today

Explore Archival Sounds Recordings via maps (UK)

The Archival Sounds Recordings website had recently introduced a new facility to allow users to explore their digitised sounds via maps. Instead of relying on browsing or searching via keyword, users can now click on the customised Google Map, which reveals sound recordings related to a particular place. This is particularly useful for collections that have a broad range of sources, such as soundscapes, accents or natural history recordings

The Canadian Library Association Announces Winner of the CLA/Information Today Award for Innovative Technology

Canadian Library Association / Association canadienne des bibliothèques has announced that the 2009 recipient of the CLA/Information Today Award for Innovative Technology is the Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library (PARL). The award is given in recognition of "Lobster Fishing on the Susan B", a digital story book. "Lobster Fishing on the Susan B" is the first electronic book to be produced by a public library in Nova Scotia. This interactive digital story book describes the lobster fishery in an entertaining and instructive way for children aged 4-8. It was designed with a language arts component, which can be integrated into a teaching curriculum, assisting children learning to read with narration and certain words defined individually. The e-book serves to highlight tourism, economic development and the local artistic community for the northern shore of Nova Scotia

Mystery Beatles lyric is a dream display at the British Library

A previously unseen George Harrison lyric, found by author and collector Hunter Davies, goes on display at the British Library. Written in early 1967 when George was aged 23 or 24, the untitled song was penned at a time when The Beatles had stopped touring to spend more time in the studio to work on what would arguably become their most famous record, Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The Beatles are still one of the world's greatest bands, almost 40 years after their split. Hunter Davies found the lyric during his research for a new edition of The Beatles official biography, which has just been re released more than 40 years after its original publication. In its introduction, Hunter recalls how he collected Beatles lyrics discarded as scrap paper from the floor of Abbey Road studio and kept them as souvenirs. It's almost certain that they would have been thrown out by the cleaners if he hadn't picked them up

"Among the paintings and drawings, musical works and advertisements that make up the records series COPY 1 are well over 100,000 photographs. Volunteers from the Friends of The National Archives have now provided online Catalogue descriptions of those registered for copyright in 1911 – over 2,700 in total. The many images of urban and rural life and long-disappeared vistas will be of interest to both local and family historians, providing context to social and family research. Engineering feats and disasters are covered, along with the coronation celebrations for Edward VII, the Empire exhibition at Crystal Palace, and images of music hall stars. Sportsmen and women are also featured, including boxers (one photograph includes Jack Johnson – the 'Galveston Giant'), rugby players, footballers and T. W. Burgess, who swam the Channel for the first time since Captain Webb in 1875."

Elsevier admits journal error

"Elsevier, the world's leading scientific publisher, said it had failed to meet its own standards for "accuracy and transparency" in producing a publication sponsored by Merck, the US pharmaceutical group, but presented as an independent academic journal. The Australasian Journal of Bone and Joint Medicine, complete with an honorary editorial board of academics from Australia and New Zealand, contained a selection of reprinted articles from other journals concerning Merck's medicines Fosamax and Vioxx, and no disclosure that it was funded by the company. The publication marks a fresh twist in tactics to promote medicines by pharmaceutical companies, which have long provided substantial income to academic journals by paying for large numbers of reprints of articles favourable to their drugs for distribution to doctors. However, the Australasian Journal of Bone and Joint Medicine, which was produced in several issues between 2003 and 2005, has no website and is not listed as a journal in standard depositories of academic literature such as the Medline database" - FT

Free Workshops at the Wellcome Library (UK)

The new spring/summer programme of Wellcome Library workshops can be found on the Library website. The workshops provide introductions to information resources and research and are aimed at the general public.

- training on specific resources such as the Wellcome Images database and PubMed Central
