Podcast: Railways and the mobilisation for war in 1914

Podcast: Railways and the mobilisation for war in 1914The historian A.J.P Taylor, considering the events of 1914, once argued: 'The First World War had begun - imposed on the statesmen of Europe by railway timetables. It was an unexpected climax to the railway age.' This talk will look at how the railways of Britain and Europe prepared for war in 1914 and how central the railways were to troop mobilisation. Bruno Derrick has been employed by the Public Record Office/The National Archives for 23 years. He has a particular interest in military history and military records, and in records relating to railways, canals and transport, with a particular emphasis on railway genealogy going back to the earliest days of the railways
