Google and four US States improve public access to government websites

Google has announced partnerships with the states of Arizona, California, Utah and Virginia to make it easier to search for hard-to-find public information on state government websites. "These partnerships developed as both Google and officials with the four state governments recognized that the public is increasingly turning to search engines like Google to access government services, but that a significant share of the information on state agency websites is not included in its index of information sources on the web. As a result, many online government services can be difficult for the public to find"

SWORD

"SWORD (Simple Web-service Offering Repository Deposit) will take forward the Deposit protocol developed by a small working group as part of the JISC Digital Repositories Programme by implementing it as a lightweight web-service in four major repository software platforms: EPrints, DSpace, Fedora and IntraLibrary. The existing protocol documentation will be finalised by project partners and a prototype 'smart deposit' tool will be developed to facilitate easier and more effective population of repositories"

"ProQuest CSA and the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council are delighted to announce the launch of KnowUK and NewsUK online reference and newspapers services for public libraries in England. Center for Jewish History launches CJH Digital Collections

The Center for Jewish History in New York has launched CJH Digital Collections, an online multimedia catalog of materials documenting Jewish culture and history from across the globe. The catalog currently contains more than 13,000 unique images, 200 archival finding aids and 40 audio files, most of which are available to the general web public, and is continuing to grow rapidly as the Center and its five Partners continue to take advantage of the benefits that digitization can offer
