IMLS requests proposals to study free access to computers, the Internet, and related services
"The Institute of Museum and Library Services, U.S.A. invites proposals for a cooperative agreement to examine the social value of free access to computers, the Internet, and related services at the nation’s public libraries. Since the 1990s, public libraries have provided free access to the Internet and computers with support from government and private foundations. But, so far, little research has studied the impact of this access. IMLS' cooperator will examine the impact of free access to the Internet and computers on the social, economic, personal, professional well-being for individuals, families, and communities. The IMLS project will be carried out with support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation"
