50,000 Norwegian books available on the net

The Norwegian National Library has just made 50,000 Norwegian books accessible on the net - at no charge and perfectly legal. The service, Bokhylla.no was officially opened by Minister of Culture Trond Giske. Based on the results of the High North Project, the National Library through this project will make available on the Internet all books published in Norway through three decades, namely those between 1790-99, 1890-99 and 1990-99. During a three year period, the public will get easy access to a considerable body of Norwegian literature, around 50,000 books. 10,000 books were made available when the service opened - The Norway Post

History of the Book in Canada - "Funded by a Major Collaborative Research Initiative Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, this multidisciplinary project was undertaken to publish six volumes (three in English, three in French) chronicling the history of print culture in Canada. In addition, a website of electronic resources was developed. Unique among national book history projects, the Web site contains comprehensive bibliographic, geographic, and biographic data about Canada's print culture from its beginnings in the sixteenth century to the twenty-first century. "In the midst of the credit crunch, a group of 7 to 14 year old Roma in East London are showing you don't need expensive digital cameras to produce professional photographs. Working with Akademia Pstryk and The Children Society this group of talented young people are using pinhole photography to produce a picture book that will teach people about their culture. 1,500 copies of the book will be given away at public events, and it will also be available to download online. The Roma people originated from India around 1000 years ago and are currently Europe's largest ethnic minority. However, widespread ignorance of Roma culture has meant prejudice against the Roma is still common in mainstream society"

"Alice Munro is the winner of the third Man Booker International Prize. Buckinghamshire mobile library scoops prize (UK)

A Buckinghamshire mobile library has scooped a top national award. The newest of the county council's library fleet, which powers itself with solar panels in the roof, was handed the delegates prize at the annual Mobilemeet in Suffolk. The Buckinghamshire Mobile is set up to serve rural communities, and features an awning and lighting and sound systems to enable promotional activities, and was designed specifically for BCC. 40% of university libraries plan cuts to book and journal purchases next year (UK)

"Academics should brace themselves for "severe" cuts in access to new books and journals in the next academic year as higher costs caused by the fall in the value of the pound put libraries under pressure. Times Higher Education reported in January that the drop in the pound's value was having a "crippling effect" on the budgets of UK university libraries, which faced huge increases in subscriptions costs for research journals from the US and elsewhere in Europe. Bowker reports U.S. book production declines 3% in 2008, but "On Demand" publishing more than doubles

"Bowker has released statistics on U.S. book publishing for 2008, compiled from its Books In Print database. Based on preliminary figures from U.S. publishers, Bowker is projecting that U.S. title output in 2008 decreased by 3.2%, with 275,232 new titles and editions, down from the 284,370 that were published in 2007. Despite this decline in traditional book publishing, there was another extraordinary year of growth in the reported number of 'On Demand' and short-run books produced in 2008. Bowker projects that 285,394 On Demand books were produced last year, a staggering 132% increase over last year's final total of 123,276 titles. This is the second consecutive year of triple-digit growth in the On Demand segment, which in 2008 was 462% above levels seen as recently as 2006"

London's first low carbon library (UK)

LISTen: The LISNews.org Podcast - Episode #72. "This week's podcast is going to sound perhaps a little different. We were testing out our field equipment profile in a new location. I was dog-sitting a bull dog and her puppies so the usual recording location was a no go. The episode starts off with the zeitgeist review. Per usual, we look at the week's top ten stories by hits and by comments and bring you the lower half of each. The LISNews daily e-mails (you are subscribed to them, aren't you?) typically bring you the first half. After that we relay three stories from Radio New Zealand International. As the crisis in Fiji continues to heat up, press freedoms are being curtailed and journalists are being jailed. The three stories relate to how the knowledge ecology is being fundamentally altered in the island nation by the military regime presently in power so as to stamp out dissent. Fiji was a Westminster-style parliamentary democracy as recently as December 2006. With the relay out of the way, discussion of the recent Google and Twitter issues is presented from the perspective of libraries operating within the overall reach of their funding agencies.
