Rare Shakespeare folio to be sold
A rare book of Shakespeare's plays, considered to be one of the most important in British literature, is to be auctioned at Sotheby's in London. The complete first folio of the playwright's work had a print run of approximately 750 in 1623. However, only a third of these survive and most of them are incomplete. The book is being sold by Dr Williams's Theological Library in London, which hopes the proceeds, expected to be more than 3m pounds, will secure its future - BBC

Institute of Museum and Library Services awards over $160 million to State Libraries
Anne-Imelda Radice, Ph.D., Director of the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services, has announced grants totaling more than $163 million to states for library service. "This funding helps libraries meet the changing needs of their communities," said Dr. Radice. A recent national study from the American Library Association (ALA) underscores this assertion - 92% of American's surveyed believe libraries will still be needed in the future, even with all of the information available on the Internet

Searches on Google Scholar will now include links to the British Library's document delivery service. European Commission unveils plans for European digital libraries
The European Commission has unveiled its strategy to make Europe's written and audiovisual heritage available on the Internet. Turning Europe's historic and cultural heritage into digital content will make it usable for European citizens for their studies, work or leisure and will give innovators, artists and entrepreneurs the raw material that they need. The Commission proposes a concerted drive by EU Member States to digitise, preserve, and make this heritage available to all. It presents a first set of actions at European level and invites comments on a series of issues in an online consultation (deadline for replies 20 January 2006). The replies will feed into a proposal for a Recommendation on digitisation and digital preservation, to be presented in June 2006

Authors make book fair protest
Authors, including Will Self and Ian McEwan, have protested against the organisers of the London Book Fair being involved in the arms trade. In a letter published in The Times Literary Supplement, the writers called for Reed Exhibitions to stop holding arms fairs around the world. RSC offers developing countries free access to journals archives
The Royal Society of Chemistry is to be the first Learned and Professional organisation to provide developing countries with free access to science journal archives. New York Public Library acquires William S. Burroughs archive
The New York Public Library's Henry W. and Albert A. Berg Collection of English and American Literature has acquired the archive of the avant-garde Beat writer William S. Burroughs (1914-1997). Containing Burroughs' manuscripts and correspondence from the early 1950s to the early 1970s, the richest portion of his writing career, and including items such as the typescript and draft versions of his seminal novel The Naked Lunch, the archive previously had only two private owners aside from Burroughs himself and has never been publicly accessible

Juilliard receives gift of rare manuscripts
In a gesture of breathtaking generosity, Juilliard's chairman, Bruce Kovner, has donated his extraordinary collection of rare music manuscripts to the School.
