Lynne Brindley, Chief Executive of the British Library, today predicted a switch from print to digital publishing by the year 2020. Speaking at the launch of the Library's new three-year strategy, Lynne Brindley said: "Most people are aware that a national switch to digital broadcasting is expected by the end of this decade. Less well known is the fact that a similar trend is underway in the world of publishing: by the year 2020, 40% of UK research monographs will be available in electronic format only, while a further 50% will be produced in both print and digital. A mere 10% of new titles will be available in print alone by 2020..."

The Institute of Museum and Library Services has awarded Native American tribes across the United States $1,361,000 in grants to improve library services. In all, 229 grants will strengthen library service for 237 Native American tribal communities and Alaska Native villages

Innovative Interfaces has announced the availability of two new RSS capabilities for Millennium. The first offering will give libraries the tools they need to display RSS feeds in any number of locations in the online catalog. The second offering, a new product called Millennium Feed Builder, will allow staff to send the results of any Boolean query of the Millennium database as an RSS feed. This means that the library can deliver updated news and information. These new abilities will allow libraries to demonstrate their value as information aggregators and distributed content providers without the hassle of manual maintenance or the content limitations of static Web pages. Robert Louis Stevenson's classic adventure Kidnapped has been chosen as Edinburgh's Book of the City. Ten thousand copies of the novel will be distributed free across Edinburgh in cafes, train stations or even taxis, with a sticker saying "I'm free, take me home and read me", in an effort to get the entire city reading a single text. The project, called One Book One City, will be officially launched next spring. The reading plan is billed as the flagship of Edinburgh's new status as UNESCO City of Literature

OverDrive has announced the addition of Video on Demand (VoD) services and materials to its Digital Library Reserve network. The service is scheduled to go live for patron use later this year
OCLC will begin a pilot project later this month that will make it easy for library staff and patrons to find and use full-text electronic journals in library collections. ebrary has announced that it has launched a new version of the ebrary Reader, its free software application that turns static PDF files into research-ready documents that can be cross-referenced and searched online
The PBCore (Public Broadcasting Metadata Dictionary) was created by the public broadcasting community in the United States of America for use by public broadcasters and related communities. Initial development funding for PBCore was provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The PBCore is built on the foundation of the Dublin Core (ISO 15836), an international standard for resource discovery, and has been reviewed by the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative Usage Board

The Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) and CHOICE magazine now are accepting applications to serve on the editorial board of Resources for College Libraries, a new core collection of recommended titles for academic libraries. The successor to "Books for College Libraries, 3rd Edition" (BCL3), RCL will be an online product whose coverage includes both electronic resources and books. The target publication date is September 2006

Albanian novelist Ismail Kadare has won the inaugural Man Booker International Prize, beating British authors Muriel Spark, Doris Lessing and Ian McEwan. The writer, who has lived in France since 1990, will receive 60,000 pounds at a ceremony in Edinburgh on 27 June

The Library of Congress has announced a new Web site providing an overview and technical specifications for the development phase of the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP). This program, a partnership between the National Endowment of the Humanities (NEH) and the Library of Congress (LC), is a long-term effort to develop an Internet-based, searchable database of all U.S. newspapers with descriptive information and digitization of select historic pages. Supported by NEH, this rich digital resource will be developed and permanently maintained at the Library of Congress. An NEH grant program will fund the contribution of content from, eventually, all U.S. states and territories
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has released a report on how museums and libraries bolster K-12 education and lifelong learning in communities across the Nation. Charting the Landscape, Mapping New Paths: Museums, Libraries, and K-12 Learning, is based on a workshop the Institute hosted August 30-31, 2004 at which more than seventy educators, researchers, policymakers, and museum and library professionals examined K-12 collaborations among their organizations

Trunk Show at the Women's Library, London, UK, is an international travelling exhibition, initiated in the USA by artist and curator Ann Shostrom, with the idea of building an international exhibition from the ground up, involving local curators and artists at each venue. With each new location, a local curator adds a new trunk full of artworks, with artists exploring themes of portability, mapping, miniaturization, travel and displacement. Trunk Show so far includes over 100 artists based in the USA, Ireland and the UK, and the London showing features both established and emerging artists, including Rosemarie McGoldrick, Double 0, Nicola Oxley, Elizabeth Price, Bob & Roberta Smith and Camilla Wilson
