Library ban on sermons of hate (UK)"Hundreds of taped sermons by Al Qaeda hate cleric Anwar al-Awlaki have been withdrawn from public library shelves after questions were raised by the Sunday Express. Muslim-led Tower Hamlets Council in east London removed 258 'talking book' cassettes on Friday after we asked bosses to justify being the only authority in the capital stocking his work. The tapes were available to borrow from the council's main library in Whitechapel, a few hundred yards from where Detroit bomber Umar Abdulmutallab worshipped at the controversial East London Mosque. American-born Awlaki, who records his messages from his base in Yemen, has been named as the 23 year old's spiritual mentor and the man who encouraged him to try to murder innocent civilians" - Sunday Express

Why are they burning books in south Wales?

Why are they burning books in south Wales?Leo Hickman of The Guardian writes: "As an act of wanton barbarism, there is little to rival the symbolism of setting fire to a book. It is, therefore, genuinely shocking to learn that book-burning is taking place in south Wales. Pensioners in Swansea are reportedly buying books from charity shops for just a few pence each and taking them home for fuel. With temperatures plummeting and energy costs on the rise, thick books such as encyclopaedias are said to be particularly sought after"

Living Library becomes Human Library

"It has been almost 10-years since "Menneskebiblioteket" was opened for the first time at Roskilde Festival in Denmark. Shortly after the first event the creators including the author of this article, began promoting the idea outside Denmark. Today more than 45 countries have introduced the concept and so far it has been a great adventure. However when we translated the name of the concept to English, we made a mistake and now the time has come to correct that mistake. We have received documentation from attorneys representing a private company that clearly shows their right to use the old name in the United States and as we are not prepared to pay for the use of this name, we have decided to correct what has long been a mistake anyhow, the name. The correct translation from Danish is "Human Library" as it is human beings on loan and not books. And so we are happy to rectify this mistake now before we reach further territories. As of January 1st 2010 - we are now the Human Library"

Digital piracy hits the e-book industry

Digital piracy hits the e-book industry(CNN) - When Dan Brown's blockbuster novel "The Lost Symbol" hit stores in September, it may have offered a peek at the future of bookselling. On Amazon.com, the book sold more digital copies for the Kindle e-reader in its first few days than hardback editions. This was seen as something of a paradigm shift in the publishing industry, but it also may have come at a cost. Less than 24 hours after its release, pirated digital copies of the novel were found on file-sharing sites such as Rapidshare and BitTorrent. Within days, it had been downloaded for free more than 100,000 times. Digital piracy, long confined to music and movies, is spreading to books. And as electronic reading devices such as Amazon's Kindle, the Sony Reader, Barnes & Noble's Nook, smartphones and Apple's much-anticipated "tablet" boost demand for e-books, experts say the problem may only get worse.
