Tudor queen celebrated in new online resource

As part of the celebrations marking the 500th anniversary of Henry VIII's accession to the throne, the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre has launched an online resource looking at his marriage to Wiltshire-born Jane Seymour. Part of the Archive Awareness Campaign, the blog looks at some of the records relating to their marriage and, in particular, Henry's gifts of land and properties to his third, and 'favourite', wife. Henry became engaged to his mistress Jane Seymour on 20 May 1536 - only one day after the execution of his second wife, Anne Boleyn. The Henry VIII blog, featuring images of the lavishly decorated documents, can be found at wshc.eu/blog.

Worcester Library and History Centre (UK)

" Construction company Galliford Try has been signed up to build the GBP60m Worcester Library and History Centre. The centre is thought to be the first of its kind in the UK, integrating a university library with a public one. The centre, in The Butts, will include learning and heritage facilities, and will be open to all members of the public. Construction work is due to start in September and should be completed by January 2012. The library is a joint operation between Worcestershire County Council and the University of Worcester" - BBC

First Lotto library opens in UK

"Newbold Verdon, the first of 58 'Lotto' libraries planned throughout the country, has opened its doors for the first time. The first of the new wave of libraries Newbold Verdon, on the outskirts of Leicester, received GBP781,000 from the Big Lottery Fund's Community Libraries programme. In total 58 libraries will receive a share of GBP80m thanks to a joint partnership between the Fund and the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council. The programme has funded the transformation of the chosen libraries so that traditional library services can be combined with other local services such as learning centres, One Stop Shops, health initiatives and space for community activities, all under one roof"

OCLC and EBSCO partnership offers library patrons online access to full text of authoritative electronic journals

"OCLC and EBSCO have signed an agreement that makes it possible for libraries that subscribe to both WorldCat Local and EBSCOhost services to provide their users with easy online access to the full text of a wide range of authoritative electronic content through the Web. As part of the WorldCat.org Partner Program, EBSCO's authoritative content, which includes some of the most popular databases in libraries, will be more visible to library patrons through WorldCat Local, the OCLC service based on the WorldCat.org platform that connects library users to local, regional and global library resources through a single search box."

Kathleen T. Horning named Scholastic Library Publishing Award winner

"The American Library Association has named Kathleen T. Horning the recipient of the 2009 Scholastic Library Publishing Award. The honor, which will be presented during the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago, is bestowed on a librarian whose extraordinary contributions to promoting access to books and encouraging a love of reading for lifelong learning exemplifies outstanding achievement in the profession. "The (US) Library of Congress has announced the launch of its own YouTube channel. The Library of Congress is the United States' oldest federal cultural institution, and serves as the research arm of Congress. It is also the largest library in the world, with millions of books, recordings, photographs, maps and manuscripts in its collections. In terms of 'modern' (20th-century) media, they curate over 6 million films, broadcasts and sound recordings). Australian library finds copy of Schindler's list

"Australian researchers sifting papers belonging to the author of "Schindler's List" discovered a yellowing roll of 801 men saved from the Holocaust by the German industrialist - the very copy the writer used to bring the story to the world's attention, a curator said Monday. The 13-page document is a copy of one of Oskar Schindler's famed compilations of names that eventually included 1,100 men and women he saved by employing them in his factories in World War II Germany. "It's the list Tom used when writing 'Schindler's Ark' and that really brought Schindler's actions to the attention of the world," said State Library of New South Wales co-curator Olwen Pryke, referring to the book's author, Thomas Keneally. "It is a copy of a copy, but it's a moving document, regardless," said Pryke, who stumbled upon the pages late last year. "When you look at it you think of the lives that were saved.""

Innovative reading list wins 'Developer Happiness' prize

"An innovative, web 2.0-friendly reading list prototype has won first prize in a JISC competition designed to encourage innovation and collaboration among Higher Education software developers. The competition stemmed from the dev8D Developer Happiness event in February, the first JISC-sponsored event of its kind to gather software developers from HE as well as commercial backgrounds, to collaborate and work on innovative ideas for solutions to common educational issues. The winning entry, from a team at the University of Kent, is a reading list prototype called List8D. This innovation would help academic staff create and manage web 2.0-friendly reading lists more easily. It would also allow the delivery of personalised reading lists to students, with direct links to catalogue items and books for purchase via Amazon"

Jack Bumsted Wins J. W. Dafoe Prize

Winnipeg scholar Jack Bumsted has won this year's John Wesley Dafoe Prize for his book, Lord Selkirk: A Life. The book chronicles the life of Lord Selkirk (born Thomas Douglas), who led the Selkirk settlers to the Red River Settlement. In an interview with the Winnipeg Free Press, Bumsted said that Selkirk led a "fascinating life." "He started out his life as a scientist and a rationalist, and in his struggles with the North-West Company, he became a romantic adventurer." The administrators of the award said it was "exhaustively researched and masterfully written."

Premier League Reading Stars (UK)

Premier League Reading Stars is an educational project that harnesses the motivational power of football to encourage families to enjoy reading. It targets those hard to reach groups in society who may not have shown an interest in reading, but who do have a passion for football. Each of the 20 Premier League clubs nominate a Reading Star to recommend his favourite book. Each club then adopts local public libraries who host reading clubs based on the book choices of all 20 Premier League Reading Stars. Both the children and parents attend the reading club, also enjoying a visit to a bookshop, a session with a published football author and a visit to the club stadium. Some lucky readers may also get to meet their favourite team's Reading Star!

W.E.B. Du Bois' papers to be digitized for viewing Online by UMass Amherst Library

"The W.E.B. Du Bois Library at the University of Massachusetts Amherst has announced that it will digitize an estimated 100,000 items from its Du Bois collection, thanks to a $200,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation. The project will provide online access for the first time to original diaries, letters, photographs and other material related to one of the most influential African Americans in United States history. The two-year project, to start in July, will provide unprecedented access to Du Bois’s papers, not only to historians and scholars but also to Massachusetts university and high school students, teachers and the public at large, according to Robert Cox, director of special collections at the library. Du Bois wrote more than 4,000 articles, essays and books, most of which are now hard to find or out of print"

New Hampshire State Library hosts poetry blog

In honor of National Poetry Month, the Center for the Book at the New Hampshire State Library will host an online celebration of New Hampshire poets and poetry. Each day in April, the N.H. Center for the Book will feature a different Granite State poet on its blog, Book Notes. A variety of poets have signed up to participate in the celebration - many whose work is well known, and some who may be a new discovery. The featured poets will be revealed one at a time as their work is featured on the blog, making the event a month-long reading and learning experience. Each day's poetry posting will be available as part of the NH Center for the Book's blog, or through a special RSS feed and a widget that will allow anyone to easily add this celebration of Granite State poetry to their own Web site, blog, or Facebook page. All postings will remain available on the N.H. Center for the Book's blog after National Poetry Month

Library of Birmingham (UK) plans unveiled as recession opens a new chapter for civic buildings

"Plans for Britain's biggest ever public library were unveiled in Birmingham yesterday in the clearest sign yet of a national renaissance in the construction of grand civic libraries. The GBP193m Library of Birmingham will tower over Centenary Square in the heart of the city with capacity to accommodate more than three million visitors a year, according to the city council, which is backing the project with GBP159m in public funds. Only the British Library, which operates by appointment only and does not lend, will be larger. The investment in the 31,000 sq m glass and steel facility, designed by avant-garde Dutch architects Mecanoo, comes as libraries report a 10-15% increase in visitor numbers since the economic downturn began to bite last summer." - Guardian

UNESCO, Library of Congress and partners launch World Digital Library

"UNESCO and 32 partner institutions will launch the World Digital Library, a web site that features unique cultural materials from libraries and archives from around the world, at UNESCO Headquarters on 21 April. The site will include manuscripts, maps, rare books, films, sound recordings, and prints and photographs. It will provide unrestricted public access, free of charge, to this material. The launch will take place at a reception co-hosted by UNESCO Director-General, Koïchiro Matsuura, and U.S. Librarian of Congress, James H. Billington. Directors of the partner institutions will also be on hand to present the project to ambassadors, ministers, delegates, and special guests attending the semi-annual meeting of UNESCO's Executive Board. Media are invited to attend a pre-launch press conference, which will take place at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on 21 April at 11 a.m."

E-journals: their use, value and impact

"The new RIN report E-journals: their use, value and impact looks into how researchers use e-journals and the impact this has on provision of library and information services. The findings reveal some staggering figures for the amount of e-journals being used by researchers. A lot of money, time and energy is spent on producing journals but we still do not have any practical evidence about how they are actually used. Many surveys have been done in the past on how much researchers welcome online access to journals but none have demonstrated how users actually behave and use e-journals in practice. Until now, there has been no joined-up, evidence-based study to give a detailed portrait of the information seeking behaviour of UK researchers, of how they make use of online journals and of the benefits that might come from this use, the RIN report seeks to address this"
