The new museum - based in the West Wing of the Civic Centre - is located within Southampton's Cultural Quarter within easy access of the railway station and city centre car parking and close to the city centre parks. The site, owned by Southampton City Council, became available when Hampshire Police moved to a purpose-built venue in March 2011 (the Magistrates' Courts having been vacated in 2002). The overall aspiration was to deliver a museum with an estimated capital cost of £15million for the first phase of the project. Phase 1 of the development contains three main exhibitions:
1. Gateway to the World
2. Southampton’s Titanic Story
3. Titanic the Legend
There are 2 permanent galleries for exhibitions 1 & 2. A special exhibitions gallery, in the new extension, is used in year one for an exhibition curated in-house entitled Titanic the Legend. There will be a programme of special exhibitions from year 2 onwards
