Detroit neighbors refuse to give up east side library (USA)For residents of Detroit's lower east side, the historic Monteith Branch Library was one of the last existing signs of public subsidy and support. In a neighborhood where city services have diminished to the point of non-existence, the library served as a focal point for scholastic resources and community gatherings. Folks living near Monteith Library are now mounting a sustained campaign to reopen its doors. The seven-member Detroit Library Commission announced the closure of four branch libraries in November 2011. Citing budget shortfalls and decreasing property taxes, the commission executed those closures December 22 - The Michigan Citizen
