Open Access Repository Junction
"EDINA has successfully been awarded a JISC project grant to develop a broker system to aid interoperability between open access repositories. The Open Access Repository Junction (OA-RJ) will run from 1 August 2009 through to 31 March 2011. The OA-RJ project builds on and enhances previous work carried out under the auspices of the JISC-funded Depot project. One of the objectives of the Depot was to devise an unmediated (computer-assisted) reception and referral service, called Repository Junction, which collected information in order to redirect users to existing Institutional Repository (IR) services. This was to support the principal objective of the Depot, which was to provide a repository for author/researchers at institutions that did not (then) have an IR. The new project aims to develop the Repository Junction from its current simple form contained within the Depot, into a stand-alone broker mechanism which can be easily adopted and integrated by services or projects run by other institutions or organisations. OA-RJ will primarily look at addressing the problems of repository deposit currently faced by researchers who have written a multi-authored journal article associated with multiple institutions and grant-funding organisations. This project will test the broker model against a number of use case scenarios in ways that we expect to be sufficiently generic that it can be deployed in other repository workflows and environments."

New archives continually are being built and published and will appear along with the current archives, available at webarchives.cdlib.org"

Clash guitarist Mick Jones has become a 'guerrilla librarian'
"The Clash's lead guitarist Mick Jones has swapped the noisy world of punk rock for a quiet life as a librarian. The lead guitarist, who was a prominent figure in the punk rock movement of the seventies and eighties, opened his Rock-n-Roll Public Library in London July 22. Based in an office near Portobello Road, west London, close to where Jones formed The Clash with Joe Stummer in 1976, the "guerrilla library" will include 10,000 items from the guitarist's private collection. Including Beatles memorabilia, Clash artwork and items the band members wore on stage, the full collection has never been seen before by the public. Jones, 54, told The Guardian the five week exhibition was a challenge to the "blandness" of other music museums. "It's a direct artistic challenge to the likes of the corporate British Music Experience," he said. Fans of The Clash will be able to view the lead guitarist's collection of records, pizza boxes from the band's tours and camouflage graffiti boots worn on stage. They may even catch a glimpse of Jones himself, who will be recording with up-and-coming bands in his studio next door for the Strummerville Foundation. Entry to the library is free"

Ohio Library Council cancels 2009 Convention & Expo
"On Friday, July 17, the OLC Board of Directors made the difficult decision to cancel the 2009 Ohio Library Council Convention & Expo, October 21-23, in Cleveland. This decision was unanimously supported by Tom Adkins, Convention Chair, as well as the Planning Committee Chairs – Cindy Lombardo, Program Chair; Andrew Mangels, Local Arrangements Chair; Jamie Mason, Expo Chair. The Convention & Expo is considered to be the signature event of the Ohio Library Council. However, OLC staff learned last week in a survey of library directors that very few libraries will have the funds to send library staff to this event. In light of the recent developments in the state’s public library funding and the drastic adjustments that all libraries have been making to their operations, the OLC made the most fiscally-responsible route for both members and the organization"

Lost page of American history found at The National Archives (UK)
"A rare print of America's Declaration of Independence has been found among files at The National Archives at Kew. Printed on 4 July 1776, the Dunlap print is one of only 26 known copies in the world and is named after John Dunlap, the printer whose name is at the bottom of each copy. The last discovered Dunlap Declaration, found at a flea market in 1989, sold at auction in 2000 for $8.14million. The newly discovered print was found, hidden among correspondence from American colonists intercepted by the British in the 18th century, by an American carrying out research at The National Archives."

SLA Alignment Project
"For almost 100 years, SLA has served as the leading association representing special librarians and information specialists around the world. As SLA prepares for its second century of service, it does so amid sweeping technological changes that are not only reshaping the information industry, but redefining the role that the Association and the profession will play in the future.
The need to generate a sharper focus on the perceived value of the Association and the profession is even more pressing as SLA prepares for its centennial in 2009. This significant milestone provides a unique opportunity to establish a shared vision for the future and the role of information professionals in it.
To respond effectively, SLA has embarked on a thorough examination to bring clarity and unity to the core identity and values of the Association and the profession. We are working with a multidisciplinary team of research and communication professionals, led by the international communication firm, Fleishman-Hillard, and supported by futurist Andy Hines of Social Technologies and the information analytics firm, Outsell Inc.
This alignment project will not only help refine our current positioning in the marketplace, but provide a framework for discussing the inherent value in the profession and the Association in a clear, compelling and cohesive voice."
