Libraries to offer 'smart meters'

Library users in York, UK, are being given the chance to test out "smart meters" to track how much electricity and gas they use. From Monday library members across the city can to borrow a smart meter as easily as they would borrow a book. The devices record how much energy is being used in the home and gives tips on how to reduce bills. Councillor Christian Vassie said he had trialled the meters at his home and was saving £350 per year as a result. He said: "Giving people the tools to learn and change the way they use energy is exactly what libraries should be doing. "Having just returned from an international conference on energy, I believe we may well be the first local authority in Europe to take this step." - BBC
