Chicago Roots Music at the Chicago History Museum
For more than a hundred years, "Sweet Home Chicago" has been one of the music capitals of the world. Chicago is best known as a blues town, but the music doesn't end there. Chicago Roots Music explores the city's ties to many different musical genres, from the well-known jazz, blues, and gospel styles that migrated here from the South to the folk music and country sounds enjoying a revival today. The exhibition highlights the city's best-known musicians, including Thomas Dorsey, Mahalia Jackson, Win Stracke, and Jon Langford. Other popular artifacts include souvenirs from the WLS National Barn Dance, photographs and correspondence from the Blue Note, and an original sign from Nate's Deli, the Maxwell Street institution where Aretha Franklin's classic scene from The Blues Brothers movie was filmed. Opening Saturday, November 11
