SUNCAT: University of Bath serials data added

The serials' holdings of the University of Bath have been added to SUNCAT, bringing the total number of contributing libraries to 80, plus the CONSER database, the ISSN register and the Directory of Open Access Journals. The University of Bath, which was recently named as the "University of the Year" by The Sunday Times, joins over 50 Higher Education institutions on SUNCAT. It has contributed over 37,000 serial records, with a collection supporting learning, teaching and research across science, engineering, management, social sciences, and the humanities

Taylor Swift donates 6,000 books to Reading Public Library, PA (USA)

The Reading Public Library will celebrate the Taylor Swift Collection on Saturday, October 15, in the Children's Department at the Main Library and all three branches from noon to 2:00 pm. Brent High Court challenge lost (UK)

From the Public Libraries News website: Sadly, the decision has been made that the closing of half of the libraries in the borough of Brent does not contravene the 1964 Public Libraries and Museums Act. This is a dark day for the campaigners there who have worked so hard to raise money for the action and for putting the case together. It is also a depressing one for those who think that the decision in one council case will naturally mean that all other challenges will be lost. However, this is not the case, each one should be heard on its own merits. For the people of Brent, it is now up to the people that should have been involved all along - Jeremy Hunt, Ed Vaizey and the DCMS - to step in and do their job. Otherwise, one wonders why they even pretend to represent the interests of library users when they apparently just sit back and allow half of the library provision in a borough to close without lifting a finger to demur

British Library publishes CD of Caribbean and black British poetry to mark Black History Month

In celebration of Black History Month the British Library has released a new 2-CD set, Caribbean Roots, featuring some of the most significant Caribbean and black British poets of the past several decades reading their own work. The 2-CD anthology features recordings first issued by the British Library on cassette over twenty years ago, together with previously unissued live performances. ARL releases statement on recent USGPO decisions concerning FDLP

The Association of Research Libraries has released a statement calling upon the US Government Printing Office to reverse its recent, troubling decisions concerning the Federal Depository Library Program. ARL asked that GPO approve the University of Minnesota Libraries as the regional for the State of Michigan once it is designated by the relevant Senators, as well as approve and support the ASERL "Guidelines for Managing FDLP Collections in the Southeast Region." Such actions are consistent with GPO past precedent and, importantly, comply with provisions in Title 44. These types of collaborations and cooperative efforts are essential to the success of the FDLP both now and in the future

Kafka's letters to his sister Ottla displayed in the UK for the first time

The newly acquired letters of Franz Kafka to his sister Ottla are on public display for the first time at the Bodleian Libraries. The Liebe Ottla exhibition celebrates the letters' acquisition in partnership with the Deutsches Literaturarchiv in Marbach, a pioneering collaboration between two cultural institutions, which jointly bought the letters in April 2011. The exhibition includes eighteen letters and ten postcards and picture-postcards which reveal the close relationship Kafka had with his favourite sister, Ottla, the youngest of his three sisters and the family member to whom he was closest. In a letter dated 4 July 1918, on display in the exhibition, Kafka states how well he and his sister understand each other: 'in fact we do live or I live with you better than with anybody else'. Most exhibits are in Kafka's own handwriting and some also contain Kafka's own drawings

JM Coetzee archive acquired by Ransom Center (USA)

The archive of Nobel Prize-winning author JM Coetzee has been acquired by the Harry Ransom Center library at the University of Texas at Austin. The $1.5m (£960,000) acquisition includes 155 boxes of the author's essays, manuscripts, notebooks, letters and speeches dating back to 1956. Coetzee said it was "satisfying" his papers would be housed at Texas, where he earned his doctorate in 1965

Podcast: Textile designs 1842-1964: exploring the Board of Trade Representations and Registers (UK National Archives)

In 1839 the Board of Trade established a scheme for proprietors of original designs to register their designs and protect them from commercial piracy. The National Archives holds the surviving representations and registers; these volumes provide information about suppliers from all over Britain, its Empire, and also mainland Europe. With the generous support of the Clothworkers Foundation, The National Archives' Collection Care Department has established a research fellowship to consider ways of enhancing public access to this unique archive. This talk focuses on the textiles, which include woven and printed cloth, trimmings and lace, as well as stevenographs, gloves, socks, sashes and even two straw bonnets. Dr Dinah Eastop works in the Collection Care Department of The National Archives, as a Clothworkers Research Fellow. She is a specialist in textile conservation and worked until recently at the Textile Conservation Centre.

London College of Fashion Victor Stiebel Archive

The London College of Fashion Victor Stiebel Archive includes three sketch books: Sketch Book of 1960-1961, Sketch Book of 1962 and 1963, and Victor Stiebel Ground Floor Collections 1961-1963. They were from his couture house in 17 Cavendish Square London W1 opened in 1958 and closed when he became ill in 1963. The sketches are in watercolour, pen and pencil and show a full length front view, with smaller sketches of the back and other details. Each sketch measures 17.5 x 21.5 cms .The books are sub-divided into seasons and then suits and blouses, day dresses, (Ascot) and cocktail dresses, evening dresses and finally coats, with normally two sketches per page. The books were presented to the London College of Fashion by John Cavanagh (a contemporary of Stiebel) in 1997

From the mid-19th century the Home Office and the Treasury became involved in the inspection and funding of reformatory and industrial schools. Children identified as vagrant, neglected, disorderly, in danger of corruption, or in the case of reformatory schools, already convicted of an offence, were taken out of their home environments and detained in institutions in which they would receive the sort of discipline and moral instruction it was feared they did not receive at home. This talk will explore sources at The National Archives which help the researcher study individual schools and pupils, build up a picture of the reformatory and industrial school experience, and understand how the system evolved during this period. Briony Paxman has worked at The National Archives for five years. She is part of the Modern Domestic Records Team and has a particular interest in records related to education, crime and juvenile delinquency

The History to Herstory Project (UK)

History to Herstory began in 2003, funded by the Big Lottery Fund, West Yorkshire Archive Service and its partners, the University of Huddersfield, The Bronte Society, Hull Local Studies Library, and Leeds City Council Libraries. Nobel prize for literature goes to Tomas Tranströmer

Born in Stockholm in 1931, Tranströmer studied at the University of Stockholm and worked as a psychologist at an institution for young offenders. His first collection of poetry, 17 Dikter (17 Poems, was published in 1954, while he was still at college. Collections including Hemligheter på vägen (1958) and Klangar och spår (1966) reflected on his travels in the Balkans, Spain and Africa, while the poems in Östersjöar (1974) examine the troubled history of the Baltic region through the conflict between sea and land

Oxford Scholarly Editions Online coming March 2012

March 2012 sees the launch of a major new publishing initiative from Oxford University Press – Oxford Scholarly Editions Online – the first phase will consist of the complete text of more than 150 scholarly editions of material written between 1485 and 1660. Oxford Scholarly Editions Online will provide an interlinked collection of authoritative Oxford editions of major works from the humanities. This content constitutes the cornerstone of research in the fields of English Literature, as well as Philosophy, History, and Religion. Each title within the collection presents the full text of the work, as established by an authoritative editor, accompanied by the editor's record of important variations in that text, and interpretative and explanatory notes. Most also have introductions placing the work and the author in a historical context, and explaining the editorial principles and the history of the text

The book will never die: Springer to offer book content back to the 1840s

Springer Science+Business Media has started its extensive digitization project, Springer Book Archives. The SBA initiative will include nearly all books that have been published since the 1840s. Springer expects that the book archives will contain around 65,000 titles. Titles include academically and historically unique works by Albert Einstein, Niels Bohr, Sir John Eccles, Lise Meitner, Werner Siemens, and Rudolf Diesel, to name just a few. The works in the digital archives will be available on the company's platform SpringerLink just like all other Springer books, which have routinely been published in electronic and print versions since 2005. When this mammoth project is completed at the end of 2012, Springer will be able to offer more than 100,000 eBooks on www.springerlink.com

Going live on January 1, 2012, the collections will feature over 14,000 electronic titles from 66 respected university press and scholarly publishers. The collections will provide libraries, researchers, and students access to a wealth of high quality book-length scholarship, including both new and classic titles, fully integrated with the over 500 journal titles in MUSE's electronic journal collections, in a user-friendly environment with rich discovery features. Project MUSE books will be offered in PDF format, searchable and retrievable to the chapter level, with unlimited simultaneous usage, no DRM, and no restrictions on printing or downloading. COUNTER-compliant usage statistics, as well as free MARC records, will be available

OCLC receives additional funding for U.S. public library awareness campaign; Geek the Library reaches 24 states

OCLC's Geek the Library community awareness campaign, piloted in 2009 and 2010 and now available to all U.S. public libraries, has received an additional grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The supplementary $726,000 provides ongoing campaign materials and field support for libraries currently running the campaign, and allows OCLC to work with additional public libraries that sign up by March 31, 2012. Funding ensures that participating libraries can use the campaign to reach their local communities through June 2013

Film on Wikileaks' source is new release from Filmakers Library

Filmakers Library, an imprint of Alexander Street Press, today announces the addition of The Forgotten Man: Private Bradley Manning and the Wikileaks Controversy to its catalogue of titles. In The Forgotten Man, reporter Quentin McDermott tells the inside story of Private Bradley Manning, the alleged source of the classified documents published by WikiLeaks, and explores the disputes surrounding the scandal. Like the controversy itself, this film begins with the shocking 2007 U.S. Army video, published by Wikileaks in April 2010, showing a group of mostly unarmed men being gunned down in Bagdad by an American helicopter. This sets the stage for an intense investigation into the reasons and personalities behind the release of the video and many other U.S. war files

At the Hague in September there was the Drankweer tentoonstelling (Anti-alcohol exhibition) at the 13th International Congress against Alcoholism. There were many others. University of the West of England links up with US libraries to offer 24/7 advice service

A new 24-hour online chat service for library users at the University of the West of England has just started in time for the new academic year. This means that students and staff can access out-of-hours advice from a network of 400 academic libraries, across the US and in the UK. UWE is one of the first universities in the UK to offer this 24/7 benefit to students and staff. Called 'Chat', the instant message service enables students to contact a member of library staff for help and receive an instant response. This is a well established mode of communicating with students and is used by many other academic libraries. What is different about the new service is that it will be available to UWE students 24/7, utilising the time difference between the UK and the United States

The Keepers Registry (Beta)

The Keepers Registry Beta service provides easily accessible information about the archiving arrangements for electronic journals. The Keepers Registry is an output of the JISC funded project, Piloting an E-journals Preservation Registry Service (PEPRS), and replaces what was previously available as the PEPRS Beta service. The Keepers Registry will continue to be developed under the activities of the PEPRS project. Background information to the PEPRS project and progress to date is available on the PEPRS project website. The Keepers are the participating archiving agencies which are acting as stewards of digital content. Each of these agencies runs a programme for the archiving of e-journals and is making metadata on the journals in their programme available to the Keepers Registry. The data supplied by the agencies is linked to the authoritative bibliographic information obtained from the ISSN Register

Europe's national librarians support opening up their data via CC0

Following the exciting news of Europeana's new data exchange agreement, which authorizes Europeana to release the metadata for millions of cultural works into the public domain using the CC0 public domain dedication, the Conference of European National Librarians voted to support the agreement in a meeting last week at the Royal Library of Denmark. CENL represents Europe's national libraries and "is responsible for the massive collection of publications that represent the accumulated knowledge of Europe."

Dispute may put a hold on e-book lending in Kansas (USA)

A contract dispute between the state library and its former provider of e-books will likely result in at least a month when the increasingly popular format will not be available at public libraries across Kansas. But Wichita is negotiating independently in an attempt to keep e-books at the ready for Wichita Public Library cardholders. A lapse in service became a possibility during contract negotiations between the state and Overdrive, a global distributor of downloadable content that is based in Cleveland. Overdrive proposed to increase its price by 700 percent over three years and force the state to relinquish ownership of the e-books it has bought for statewide use, state librarian Jo Budler said. "I was really confused and alarmed by that," she said - Kansas.com

School Librarian of the Year 2011 (UK) winner

Carol Webb, Librarian at Forest Hill School in London, was declared 2011 School Librarian of the Year at the Final on 3 October and presented with her Award by author Philip Reeve. Dawn Woods, Chair of the SLA School Librarian of the Year Selection Committee, said: "Carol was the first school librarian we visited on our quest this year and she certainly raised the bar at Olympic standard heights. The library is immediately visible from outside the school and beckons to all who pass. Within the school it is a bright focal point. Carol's information literacy approach would put some Higher Education establishments to shame. Then to top it all, we were very impressed with Carol's links to publishers. Admittedly the school has an advantage being so close to London publishing offices, but so are another few hundred schools. Carol saw the opportunities and seized them and this has resulted in an all boys' school of avid readers defying all stereotypes."

Doncaster Council plans to transfer 12 libraries (UK)

Twelve libraries in Doncaster could be run by community groups if plans are approved by Doncaster Council. The council carried out a public consultation earlier this year gathering feedback from more than 7,000 people. Doncaster Council have drawn a series of recommendations which will be proposed to the cabinet next Wednesday. The Mayor of Doncaster said the council had "worked hard to find alternative solutions"

Volunteer opportunity for First World War project (UK National Archives)

We will soon start to digitise the WO 95 record series, which consists of unit war diaries from the First World War. The series is one of the most requested in our reading rooms in Kew, and digitising it means that we will be able to make the diaries more accessible by publishing them online. The series is extremely fragile, largely due to its age and popularity, so we will carry out essential conservation work while we digitise it. Our war diaries research guide explains the importance of these records for researchers. We are looking for volunteers to help us ensure that the pages within the 5,500 pieces of WO 95 series are in the correct order before we scan them. Can you spare us a few hours of your time to help us sort and re-order them? The work involves handling original documents and will take place at The National Archives in Kew, but you don't need to be familiar with the series to volunteer as we will provide training and supervision. All volunteers will have to pass our security clearance, and we can offer basic travel expenses

Surrey library campaigners stage demonstrations (UK)

Protesters fighting an overhaul of the library service in Surrey are staging demonstrations at libraries. The Save Surrey Libraries campaign staged protests at local libraries on Saturday morning and outside Woking library in the afternoon. This week, councillors agreed plans to change the service in a move that will see some facilities lose paid staff. Surrey County Council said allowing communities to run libraries would keep all 52 sites open

Zetoc: The monitoring and search service for global research publications

The Zetoc service provides Z39.50-compliant access to the British Library's Electronic Table of Contents (ETOC). The database gives access to over 28,000 journals, 45 million article citations and conference papers. Zetoc covers every imaginable subject in science, technology, medicine, engineering, business, law, finance, the arts and humanities. The database covers the years from 1993 to date and is updated daily. A list of journal titles covered by Zetoc also provides the ISSN, latest issue and date loaded
